It was nice to get a reminder of all the fun, but in order to reacquaint myself with that, I had to revisit all of the other, darker periods. It felt like, leaving L.A., I had lost that life and was trying to reattach it - but finding that parts didn’t really fit anymore. It reminded me of an identity I had lost. The only way I could answer it was to go through my childhood. It says, “Is this how you want to die? You’ve lived your life so far. Was this really what I was supposed to do?”Īnd it propelled you to start the memoir.Įverybody was in this solitary moment where we all are wondering, “Am I going to keep my job? Is my marriage going to be OK? Do I want to do this for a living? Is the world going to be OK? Are we ever going to come out of this?” It puts death in front of your face.
That was one of the big reasons why I felt so sucked in when I decided I would be in the news business.Īnd then in moments of self-reflection like we had during the pandemic, I thought, “Wait. But if I was gonna be a doctor, I wanted to be an ER surgeon. When I went to college I thought I’d be a doctor or a lawyer. When I was growing up it was so ingrained in me that this is what work life is like. It was a huge adventure and it could be a lot of fun. And my parents also shined during chaos, during police pursuits and breaking news. Many of them rose through the ranks from being reporters and journalists to hosting their shows on MSNBC.
